50th Anniversary of the first Legislative Assembly

The Northern Territory is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Legislative Assembly.

On 20 November 1974, the nineteen members of the first Legislative Assembly met in the Chamber for the first sittings of a fully elected legislature in Northern Territory history.

To commemorate 50 years of fully elected representation in the Territory, an open day will be held at Parliament House on Saturday 23 November 2024 from 9:00 am to 2:00pm.

The open day will include guided tours for members of the public, and displays will be set up across the foyer.

The Speaker has invited members from the 1970s to the present day to speak on the Assembly’s highlights from each decade. The speeches will start at 10:00am and will be broadcast from the Chamber at Video broadcast – Northern Territory Government – Legislative Assembly

Visitors to the Parliament House open day are invited to experience the NT Library’s exhibitions, ‘A Territory Story’ and ‘One Family’s Story: Remembering Cyclone Tracy’. Find out more about the exhibitions by visiting - What‘s on at the library | Library & Archives NT
