Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1998-06-16

Will he guarantee that the Country Liberal Party will put One Nation last on its how-to-vote cards at the next election?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I listened to the radio this morning and heard that the Leader of the Opposition intended to raise this matter. I am pleased that she has, although I am somewhat at a loss to understand why she does not understand my position in relation to One Nation. If she feels that somehow there is an advantage in all of this for her party’s current federal candidate, who is on the record as being the most useless, incompetent, and inefficient federal member that we ever had, and that being Warren Snowdon - then she will be sadly disappointed.

Let Territorians be under no misapprehension as to what One Nation represents and what it stands for. It is anti-trade, it is anti-foreign investment ...

Mr Bailey: It is racist.

Mr STONE: ... it is anti-Asian ...

Ms Martin: It is unAustralian.

Mr STONE: Would you be quiet and let me give the answer, or do you want to come across here and have a go?

It is anti-immigration, and it is essentially the antithesis of everything that the Territory has been built on.

Mr Ah Kit interjecting.

Madam SPEAKER: Order!

Mr STONE: It is very timely that the Labor member for Arnhem should interject because he is the one who invited Pauline Hanson to the Northern Territory. Jack Ah Kit, the member for Arnhem ...

Madam SPEAKER: Order! Member for Arnhem.

Mr STONE: He does it every time, Madam Speaker. Good old Jack! He puts his foot in it big time. There sits the man, the Labor member, who invited Pauline Hanson to the Territory. It was interesting to read in today’s newspaper that the Leader of the Opposition felt compelled to defend her position in relation to One Nation. The Labor Party has been less than transparent in its dealings with One Nation, as evidenced by the fact that it was one of its own members who invited Pauline Hanson to come to the Territory.

Mr Bailey: It was a fundraiser ...

Madam SPEAKER: Order! The member for Wanguri.

Mr STONE: The impact of One Nation on the Labor Party in Queensland was almost of equal proportions to its impact on the Liberals and the Nationals. The member for Wanguri may shake his head, but he needs to be reminded ...

Madam SPEAKER: Order! I take it the opposition wants the Chief Minister to answer this question. Please give him the opportunity to do so without interjections.

Mr STONE: Madam Speaker, what seems to have escaped the member for Wanguri is that Labor lost at least 5 and possibly 6 seats as a result of One Nation’s participation. Territorians should be under no ...

Members interjecting.

Mr STONE: I will not be interjected at constantly, Madam Speaker. People cannot hear what I am saying.

Madam SPEAKER: Order! Member for Wanguri, members of the opposition, you ask questions and then you continually interject and wonder why you do not get an answer. Member for Wanguri, you are on a warning. Next time, you will be named.
