Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1999-06-02

I quote from statements made in this Chamber yesterday by the Country Liberal Party member for MacDonnell, John Elferink. He states that ‘there are communities in central Australia, outside Alice Springs, which have Aboriginal populations in them, that know no God at all. This is quite depressing, because some of the social problems that arise out of an ungodly life could be addressed’. Do you support these outrageous statements?

Mr Bailey interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

ANSWER

It is a pity the Leader of the Opposition couldn’t demonstrate that she’s the boss and put a sock in his mouth, Mr Speaker, but we’ll leave his rude interjections for people listening to the broadcast to assess the relevance of.

From the point of view of the comments made by the member for MacDonnell, I suggest that the member for Stuart have a talk to the member for MacDonnell, if he has the spine to do it.

Mr REED: Pygmy on steroids, look at you. Pygmy on steroids and all you can do ...

Mr Ah Kit interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr REED: ... is interrupt. Quite apart from what you have the ability to do, that is not speak your mind, be guarded about everything you say, and not be open with Territorians, he is prepared to express a point of view. If you want to talk about his point of view that he’s expressed, go and have a chat with him. You’re only 30 feet away.
