Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1998-04-23

In 1994, the Perron administration promised to introduce an Aboriginal interpreter service. In January 1998, 7 months after the completion of a pilot survey, I wrote to the Attorney-General expressing an urgent need for the service. His reply was that an evaluation report was yet to be finalised and the matter was under consideration. The Office of Ethnic Affairs provides interpreter and translator services in 36 languages, but in not one Aboriginal language. How much longer will Aboriginal people be disadvantaged in their dealings with a range of social services? Can the Attorney-General give some idea when an Aboriginal interpreter service will be introduced?

Madam Speaker, I welcome the question from the member for Arafura and advise him that the interpreter service is still being evaluated, notwithstanding that interpreters are available in health and also in the legal system. I will keep him advised as matters develop.
