Records of the Department

The Department of the Legislative Assembly (DLA) maintains corporate records that relate to the activities or operations of the Department.  The DLA may also collect, use, manage and store personal information of employees as required.  All DLA staff are obliged to apply the Information Privacy Principles (IPP) as outlined in schedule 2 of the Information Act when handling personal information. 

The Information Act provides people with the right to apply for access to government information, personal information held by the agency, and for correction to personal information, unless the information is exempt from release.

Application to access information

It is recommended that you contact the DLA before formally submitting an application to determine if the Department holds the information you want, if it is publically available already, exempt, or if your request is better directed to another agency.  

Government Information

Formal applications to access government information must be submitted in writing to the Director Business Services by email or by mail PO Box 3721, Darwin NT 0801.  To discuss your application you can contact the DLA by telephone (08) 8946 1451.

Applications must include:

    1. full name and address for correspondence
    2. of your identity
    3. detail about the information you want
    4. application fee (if necessary)

Personal Information

Individuals may request access to their own personal information by written application to the Clerk and Chief Executive of the DLA.  Applications must be submitted in writing to the Director Business Services by email or by mail PO Box 3721, Darwin NT 0801.  To discuss your application you can contact the DLA by telephone (08) 8946 1451.

If an employee advises that information is not accurate, complete or up to date the employee may request the information be updated or file a statement of the employee’s opinion.

Records and archives management

Information Management is fundamental for effective decision-making and all DLA corporate and personal records are maintained and archived in accordance with part 9 of the Information Act. Records are managed within the NT Government electronic document records management system and where necessary in a hardcopy format in accordance with the relevant legislation, standards and codes of best practice.
