Association Conference - 1995-08-22

Mr FINCH (Health Services): Mr Speaker, in relation to the member for Wanguri's question about the Criminal Lawyers Association Conference, I table for the benefit of members a letter from the association to me expressing concern about the issues raised. I table also a copy of the letter to ABC radio, and a copy of the conference program as provided to me in the first instance. It shows very clearly that the program was intended to close on the Friday at 12.30 pm. Since I could not be there to open the conference, the organisers wanted me to close it.

There is another minor point. I took exception when Michael McKenzie, on ABC radio, misquoted me as having said during the dinner that, since I was no longer to be Attorney-General or Minister for Education and Training after 1 July, I no longer gave a `rat's expletive'. That was totally incorrect. Somewhat tongue-in-cheek throughout the day, I had indicated that, although I would no longer be Attorney-General or Minister for Education and Training, there was still much to look at in Bali as the Minister for Public Employment and that, as Minister for Health Services, I was there to look after their health. In fact, there was only light-hearted comment in relation to whether or not I would still be interested in law.
