Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1994-12-01

Mr Speaker, the minister introduced and the Legislative Assembly passed the Water Supply and Sewerage Amendment Bill. Can the minister advise when this legislation will be implemented? Will a delay in implementation result from a lack of capacity in the distribution pipes and the pumping capacity of the relevant pumping stations along the line from Darwin River Dam?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, as I indicated last night in the second-reading debate on the passage of that bill, the department has been pro-active in addressing the needs for an expected increase in reticulation to rural dwellers in the Darwin area. Much work has been done already in identifying the works that will need to be undertaken to enable people to avail

themselves of a water supply service. Any additional requirements that need to be done - capital works or major works to operate the water supply - will be done as a matter of course. In regard to the member's particular concern about pumping capacity, that is a matter on which I will have to obtain specific advice which I will pass on to her.
