Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1996-11-28

When he was unable immediately to obtain the federal police report, the Chief Minister warned of a cover-up. He said: `I have smelt a rat in this all along'. He threatened: `If the federal police do not give us the report, then all hell will break loose'. Should Territorians follow the Chief Minister's lead, and smell a rat and suspect a cover-up in his refusal to table the Northern Territory police report into unauthorised use of electoral information by the Country Liberal Party?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I welcome this question from the recently-returned member for Nhulunbuy. The request of the Northern Territory police to access the AFP report was granted. Therefore, our concern was satisfied.

I return to the previous question that was asked of me by the member for Fannie Bay. When asking her question, she seriously misrepresented what was said by the president of the CLP. I am grateful to the member for Wanguri for providing me with the quote, if it has been transcribed accurately. This is what Suzanne Cavanagh said: `Obviously, you would be crazy to say in an election campaign, if you got some information from somewhere, particularly if you thought it was legitimate, that you wouldn't use ...

Members interjecting.

Mr STONE: Legitimate! Above board!

Members interjecting.

Mr STONE: That is not the question that the member for Fannie Bay asked, and that is the problem ...

Ms Martin: Absolutely!

Mr Bailey: Read the bit before it.

Mr STONE: The problem with members opposite is that they twist the truth. They only tell half-truths. It is like the member for MacDonnell this morning, speaking on the radio and claiming that the opposition has only 4 staff when, in fact, it has 7. He was giving a very selective accounting of how many times he has been chucked out of this Chamber and for what reasons. Members opposite and the Labor Party will never succeed electorally with Territorians until they start telling the truth. Let me make this offer to the opposition: you stop telling lies about us and we will stop telling the truth about you.
