Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1995-11-30

When will the Department of Education consider, as a matter of urgency, planning another primary school near or in the large current and proposed subdivisions on Girraween Road, Howard Springs? In addition, when will it consider planning a further primary school in the Howard Springs area, near the Howard Springs Reserve, where there is a government proposal to subdivide hundreds of acres of land?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, actually, planning has started already within the department in relation to the Girraween Road area. There are proposals to identify land to be set aside in the foreseeable future. We are in discussions with the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment to identify a potential site for that. A suggestion has been put forward which I have some questions about. I would not like to discuss publicly the details of that, because I do not want to create undue concern or generate speculation about where the site may be. However, the honourable member would be aware that we have already a capital works program to upgrade Humpty Doo Primary School and that some upgrading work was done recently at Taminmin High School.

A new primary school is being built near Freds Pass Reserve. That is based on our demographic projections. There is quite significant growth in the student population in the rural area and that new school is targeted to cater for that. In addition, we are planning for an additional school, and the locations we are examining are in and around the Girraween Road area. That school will be built after the construction of the facility near Freds Pass Reserve.

Mrs Padgham-Purich: If you do not hurry up, there will not be any land left.

Mr HATTON: There is some.
