Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1996-11-26

Last week, the Chief Minister rushed to the media in front of this House and, with great theatrics, revealed the identity of public servants and their handwritten notes on a Department of Health memo. Will the minister now admit that the handwritten notes on this memo, released by the Chief Minister, further confirm that the department database was used by the Country Liberal Party to target pensioners and seniors exclusively during the 1994 election?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, either I speak Chinese in this Assembly or else the opposition is not prepared to listen. The only evidence that has been produced is that a former minister asked for information from the department. That is something that is done often. I have said on a number of occasions in this House that I am writing to all nurses in the Northern Territory. It is the type of information I would ask Territory Health Services to provide for my use so that I can fulfil my duties as Minister for Health Services. That is no different from the information that has been produced by the opposition. Any allegations of some connection between that and the Country Liberal Party, I will continue to deny emphatically.
