Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-09-17

There are people in the rural area who are engaged in primary industry and who have been struggling. They have established links for marketing their products to Asian countries. I do not know if these people are members of the Country Liberal Party. However, if they approached the minister for a grant of $260 000 or $80 000 or both, as was given to the family of the Northern Territory member in the House of Representatives, would the minister see his way clear to granting the money to them?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I thank the honourable member for her question. Obviously, for many years, we have looked at any applications for assistance, whether they were from the agricultural or horticultural sectors or from small business, in an effort to promote exports from the Northern Territory, particularly to South-East Asia. It is probably of interest to the honourable member that, most recently, we assisted the Horticultural Society of the Northern Territory to establish some marketing in the South-East Asian region.

If the honourable member knows of people who wish to avail themselves of advice or to make submissions to the department, I assure her that the department will go all out to assist them to make their submissions. If their submissions stack up, we will see what we can do. A process is gone through in the department whereby bids are assessed by a team of people. Their advice flows through the department, via the chief executive officer, to me. If the case warrants it or merits it, I am sure that we could assist.
