Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1995-06-20

Can the minister advise how long it will be, and how much bush has to be burnt by arsonists who now go scot-free, before he will listen to senior fire officers, volunteers in the rural area and concerned citizens, and amend the Fire Service Act so that heavy penalties can be directed at those who light illegal fires and those who are in the vicinity of illegal wildfires in suspicious circumstances?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the new fire services legislation includes very substantial penalties of up to $10 000, if I remember rightly.

Mrs Padgham-Purich: Not for what I am talking about.

Mr MANZIE: However, I will ascertain the details because everyone in Darwin has concerns about the deliberate lighting of fires. Personally, I have great concerns about the smoke haze that covers our city at this time of the year. That is caused either by carelessness or the deliberate lighting of fires.
