Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1996-11-28

Yesterday, the Deputy Chief Minister said he had no idea how the list used to construct the Country Liberal Party letter to pensioners and aged citizens was obtained. Has the Chief Minister asked Suzanne Cavanagh where the Country Liberal Party obtained the list?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am not sure how that relates to my ministerial responsibility. Why would I ask Suzanne Cavanagh? She is quite distinct from government, and all of this predated my time in any event. I am not satisfied, nor are the Northern Territory police for that matter, that there is any relationship or any connection between the list that was provided quite legitimately to the minister enabling him to write to Territorians about their pension benefits, and a list that might subsequently have been used by the CLP - a list that can be accessed in The List of Lists. Has the member for Stuart or the Leader of the Opposition or any of the others taken the time to look at this book? Any list can be obtained from here. You can obtain a list of retirees ...

Mr Bailey: Not the up-to-date list for the Territory.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr STONE: I shall bring the House up to date on the interjections of the member for Wanguri. He is going for the record today. Yesterday, there were 254 interjections by members opposite, and the member for Wanguri led the way with 70. When the member for Nhulunbuy was thrown out, in came the member for Fannie Bay and she clocked up 60 interjections. Are we to have the same caper here today or are members interested in hearing the answers?

If the member for Stuart wants to determine how political parties obtain mailing lists, he should start with Mr Jeff Kelland who headed up Poll North, the organisation that assisted with ALP polling. He is the very man who said on radio: `This is all very normal. You can buy whatever you want to buy. You can find out who lives where and what their telephone numbers are. All of this is commercially available'. It is actually better than that. In fact, Mr Kelland referred to The List of Lists. It makes interesting reading. It contains an extensive list of retirement village residents. How about this one? `Retirees - a list of people approaching retirement or already retired. All records are 40 years or older. List size, 135 000. Source, electoral roll data'. Members opposite can continue trying to run this nonsense about some sort of conspiracy, when ...

Mr Bailey: You have not said where your party obtained the information.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr STONE: The member for Wanguri will beat 70 today the way he is going. No doubt, he will be proud of it too.

Mr Bailey: I am proud of it. While you are wrecking the parliamentary process, I will interject.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! You will interject at your own peril.

Mr STONE: He has to be the saddest person in this parliament, Mr Speaker ...

Mr Bailey: You refuse to answer questions.

Mr STONE: ... the unhappiest person who ever came into public life.

I say to the member for Stuart that there is absolutely no connection between the list that was used quite legitimately by the minister and any list that might have been used by any political party. Members opposite ought to give up.
