Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1997-04-23

The Territory government is now the proud owner of the property at 90 Fitzgerald Road, Howard Springs, having purchased it at a cost of $330 000. Why is taxpayers' money being used to fix the mess made by the family of the president of the Country Liberal Party, Suzanne Cavanagh, in relation to a commercial, profit-making deal, and why will the government not recover from the Cavanagh family the $330 000 paid out?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I do not recall seeing the name Cavanagh mentioned anywhere in the files on this matter. I do not recall the name of the developer, but I am happy to obtain and provide advice to the honourable member. It is interesting that she should pursue this particular angle. One immediately recalls all of the suggestions and allegations that have come before today from members opposite. I can go back to the days of BTEC when members opposite named people in here without any reason for doing so. They offered no apology for having named those people incorrectly, for slurring their names publicly and for having dragged their business across the front pages of newspapers.

I am aware that members opposite have priors in this regard. I am aware that, in the past, they have not only been very loose with the truth but they have in fact, misused the facts to try to promote a political point. Before I make any comment in this regard, I will check to determine whether the remarks by the honourable member and the questions she asked are factual. If they are factual, I will get back to her. If they are not factual, I dare say I will get back to her also.
