Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STONE (Chief Minister)(by leave): - 1997-04-30

Mr STONE (Chief Minister)(by leave): Mr Speaker, it was interjected that I was misquoting the member for Arnhem in relation to comments that had been attributed to me on the radio. I was incorrect in so far as it was not on the Morning Program, but on the Drive Time program on 13 February. The reporter asked:

Will you also be looking within the Labor Party?
Because we have just heard from Alec Wood that there
are, as far as he is aware, members of the ALP involved
in the Pauline Hanson support group, as well as members
of the CLP.

The member for Arnhem responded in this way:

Well, I would be interested to meet some of those people ...

Mr BAILEY: A point of order, Mr Speaker! It is quite clear under standing orders that a personal explanation is available either where a member has been misquoted ...

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: That is true.

Mr BAILEY: I have spoken on a number of occasions in relation to personal explanations by government members ...

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! The member will resume his seat. It is quite true that it is a device to correct a statement that has been made that maligns the member in some way. No new material may be introduced.

Mr STONE: I simply want to get this on the record for the sake of accuracy. I am not making any ...

Mr Bailey interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! Are you making a point of order?

Mr BAILEY: I am simply clarifying whether the Chief Minister has just said that he has disagreed with your ruling.

Mr SPEAKER: I do not believe so. He wishes to clarify something that was said. I ask the Chief Minister to make his point without introducing any new material.

Mr STONE: I will simply read the quote and that will clarify what I said to the member for Arnhem in the course of my answer. The member for Arnhem said:

Well, I would be interested to meet some of those
people. If they wish, they can find my office in First
Street, Katherine, and I will have a discussion with
them. I am not saying that people with political
affiliations across the spectrum should not be
supportive of Pauline Hanson. I mean, that is their
personal view. For goodness' sake, we live in a
democratic society.
