Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr AH KIT - 1995-10-11

On 10 September 1995, the Leader of the Opposition wrote to the Chief Minister concerning legal action being taken by me against the Deputy Chief Minister in regard to statements about social security payments that he claimed I had made during the Arnhem by-election campaign. It is now 3 weeks later, but the Leader of the Opposition has not yet received an answer. The Deputy Chief Minister's comments had no connection with his functions as a minister and there is no justification for the use of public funds to support him in this action. Therefore, I ask the Chief Minister to make a clear statement that he will not allow the Deputy Chief Minister to use public funds to defend this action.

Mr Speaker, I have no request or application before me from my colleague. However, when and if he should request that his costs be indemnified, his request will be considered on its merits and in the same way as other such applications are processed.

Mr Ede: So you are leaving it open.

Mr STONE: Do you want me to breach ...

Mr Ede: No, set out some guidelines.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!
