Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr LANHUPUY - 1995-03-01

Will the Treasurer give a guarantee that the 1995-1996 budget will provide the millions of dollars that the Minister for Education and Training says are required to overcome accommodation problems for teachers in remote communities? Will he give an additional guarantee that the budget will include a building program to provide accommodation for local recruits to health and education services in remote communities?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I cannot guarantee anything about the 1995-1996 budget other than that it will be a budget brought down in the Northern Territory which will enable us to live within our means and continue to provide the services for which we have become famous. The meeting with the federal government will be on 3 or 4 April - we still do not know which. It will be interesting to see what level of funding the Commonwealth provides to the Northern Territory for 1995-96. We have been told by the Prime Minister that we will obtain growth in real terms provided the Hilmer Report has been implemented and there is a substantial reduction in state and territory borrowing requirements or debt levels.

If the honourable member has concerns in this regard, he could write to me, along with all other interest groups, suggesting the priorities that he believes should be considered during the Northern Territory budget deliberations. I would welcome such a submission from the member for Arnhem.
