Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 1996-02-22

The community of Alice Springs was appalled by the recent, alleged sexual attack on an 81-year-old resident of the Old Timers Home. Last Tuesday, in conjunction with the service clubs in Alice Springs, I launched an appeal to assist in upgrading the security on the unit and cottages in that complex. The most immediate need is to install security doors and windows. Would the government be willing to contribute to this appeal to assist in this matter?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I share the concern and outrage expressed by the honourable member, and I commend her for immediately rallying community support to try to address at least part of those problems. I think the way that she has encouraged already various organisation in Alice Springs to commit a significant amount of money to this appeal is to be applauded. The member indicated to me that the Alice Springs community hopes to raise some $30 000 to implement security measures at the Old Timers Home. That will provide a practical additional level of security and, more importantly, some peace of mind for those residents. It is outrageous that the most vulnerable in our society, often the elderly and sometimes kids, are the victims of such outrageous actions. One would trust that justice in its fullest extent will be delivered. The government is totally delighted to provide $1-for-$1 support up to that $30 000 target. Once again, I commend the honourable member and all of the organisations and supporters who have rallied to help the Old Timers.
