Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr SETTER - 1996-10-15

What are the latest developments in making the performing arts more accessible for Territorians who live in rural and remote centres?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, following our announcement of a policy change to provide for a Performing Arts Touring Unit, we have appointed a unit coordinator - Mr Kevin Francis. Mr Francis took up his position yesterday. He is a gentleman with considerable experience of the coordination of tours, festivals, exhibitions and concerts. He has worked in remote regional areas, with a focus on the Kimberley region of Western Australia. He has organisational and policy development experience through his participation on the Board of the Arts Council of Western Australia, peer assessment panels with the Western Australian Department of the Arts and committee membership of the Cultural Planning Study with the Shire of Broome. As a result of this innovation, the ability to provide all Territorians with the pleasure of entertainment that is available to those of us who live in major cities will become more of a reality. This is a continuation of the process of developing enjoyment of the arts, performing arts and visual arts for all Territorians.
