Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1995-10-19

What plans are there to subdivide land in the Howard Springs Forest which is held currently by the Conservation Commission? Will the blocks be sold to large developers who have a history in the Litchfield Shire of failing to adhere to planning and shire requirements unless pushed and, as a consequence, leave the new owners of subdivided blocks and the Litchfield Shire with problem after problem?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the revocation of the declaration of part of the Howard Springs Forest is a question that is before the Assembly ...

Mrs Padgham-Purich: No, I am asking about the policy on the subdivision.

Mr REED: Given that the House decides to proceed with that item, and that it all comes to pass, then the issues that the member for Nelson has indicated as being of concern to her will likewise be of concern to the government in making this land available for subdivision to provide opportunities for people to take up blocks in Darwin's rural area. I understand that

there is a very strong market and that many people desire to do that. Certainly, we will be taking into account the sorts of issues that the member has raised.
