Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1994-12-01

Before the last election, the government made a commitment to Nhulunbuy Primary School to provide access to the first floor for disabled students. I believe some $70 000 was made available for that purpose. Given that this sum has proven to be inadequate to provide either an elevator or a sloped ramp, will the minister give an assurance that the government will provide the further funding that appears to be necessary to provide this much-needed access?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am not aware of a formal request although I seem to recall from the very early days that there was talk that the project might be over budget. Obviously, the school was directed to take up the matter with Department of Education officers. To be quite honest, I have no idea of the final outcome and whether or not extra money was forwarded. That is a matter that can be pursued easily, as it could have been by the school or the member at any time over the last 6 or 7 months.
