Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1994-06-30

When will the minister be able to tell us where the new Darwin rural area primary school will be built? Will it be built on Crown land or private land? When it will be built?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, as I announced 2 or 3 months ago, a decision has been taken to proceed with a new primary school in the rural area. The consultative and investigative processes will involve the Humpty Doo, Howard Springs, Middle Point and possibly even Berry Springs schools. Along with a number of other interested parties, all have received copies of the technical report now. Three sites have been proposed. One is in the Girraween Road area, one is at Freds Pass and one does not involve a specific site. I understand that the difficulty with the latter is the lack of Crown land that is centrally located. As it is most appropriate for the site to be on Crown land, that matter is being pursued at present. The final location will depend on the thoughts of those in the area who have a legitimate interest. We are not in a position to say exactly where the site will be. Preferably, it will be on Crown land that is appropriately located in terms of zoning, access and other considerations. The member and any of her constituents are more than welcome to contribute to that debate.
