Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-11-23

The Chief Minister has had a question on notice from me for some months on this matter which I raised also in the Assembly yesterday. I hope he will not try to duck answering. As he is aware, the Minister for Health Services has taken legal action against the member for MacDonnell, alleging defamation in statements made outside the Legislative Assembly. How much taxpayers' money has been committed or used to mount this action and how much has been committed by way of costs or indemnity agreement? The Chief Minister will be aware that cost arrangements of this type have been condemned, by bodies such as the Fitzgerald commission into corruption, as being wholly objectionable.

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition answered his own question when he said that it is a question on notice. No doubt, it will come to me in time and no doubt a response will be provided.

Mr Ede: I can ask questions about questions on notice. It was placed on notice a number of months ago.

Mr Bailey: This is open and accountable government. You are a farce!

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr STONE: The member for Wanguri is a great example to our young Territorians. Sadly, he provides some sort of benchmark for the behaviour that occurs in this parliament. As I said to the Leader of the Opposition, if the question has been placed on notice, it will come to me in the normal course of events.

Mr Ede: Hang on! The question was placed on notice on 28 November 1994, 12 months ago!

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr STONE: I have been Chief Minister for only 5 months. Give me a break!
