Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-05-22

Some months ago, illegal immigrants had legal representation in the Darwin Supreme Court in their argument with the Australian government over their demands to stay in our country. Who paid for the legal representation and, if it was the NT Legal Aid Commission, funded by the NT government, why was that?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am advised that their representation was funded through the NT Legal Aid Commission. While I would like to claim the credit for providing all the costs of legal aid, I believe about 70% to 75% of that aid is provided by the federal government to the NT Legal Aid Commission.
