Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1996-10-09

During the budget debate in the last sittings, the minister told the House that the repairs and maintenance allocation for Housing Commission properties in the Alice Springs region had been cut by almost $1m. Does this drastic cut explain why a single mother living in the Dixon Road part of my electorate, who is busy holding down a job and managing 4 children, was told that, if she wanted to have her house painted, she would have to do the work herself?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, as I have said, we have over 8000 residences in the Northern Territory and we do not paint on demand. The Housing Commission implements the building asset management system (BAMS). As to whether a woman in Dixon Road feels disaffected because the Housing Commission will not paint her house, I do not have that day-to-day detail. Generally, by far the majority of Housing Commission tenants are more than satisfied with the level of service they receive from the Housing Commission and are more than satisfied with the standard of accommodation.
