Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1997-05-01

I refer him to the proposed widening of the north Stuart Highway in Alice Springs. Will he explain to the residents on the north Stuart Highway why they were not consulted about the proposed widening of this road, especially as it was about to take up all but 1 m of their buffer zone? Why were the owners of the Winter Sun Caravan Park not consulted, even though this widening affects their business? Why was Alice Springs Town Council not consulted, even though the widening affects associated areas under its control? Why was the member for Braitling the only person who seemed to have any input to this proposal? All she did was make the situation worse for the residents of this area. Why did the minister not seek the opinions of the residents, the businesses and the council affected by this proposal?

Mr Toyne: No.

Mrs Braham: The candidate.

Mr COULTER: That is right, the Labor Party candidate. The Labor Party candidate in Alice Springs is trying to gain ownership of this issue. The ALP knows it is a big issue there. The member for Braitling has been at the forefront, coming up with realistic options for the road duplication. Indeed, we scrapped the original design plans in order to accommodate the concerns of the people in the area. I would like to thank also the members for Araluen and Greatorex who have supported this project. I suggest that the member for Stuart might like to speak to the member for Braitling and she will explain to him how to go about getting projects done.
