Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr MITCHELL - 1997-04-24

The Northern Territory Institute of Sport is appointing regional staff throughout the Territory. When will this process be complete?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, uniquely in Australia, the Northern Territory Institute of Sport is not based only in the capital city. For example, in Western Australia, if somebody from the Kimberley wanted to access the Western Australian Institute of Sport, they would be required to move to Perth, as would people from western New South Wales be required to move to Sydney to access their institute. We have decided deliberately in the Northern Territory that we will provide as much access as possible to people in regional areas. Part of that process is the appointment of regional development advisory officers in various locations. Their jobs are, in order of priority: to represent the Institute of Sport in their respective local communities; to provide a link in contact with the full scholarship holders who may reside or train in their region; to provide support and a link for those squad programs that incorporate athletes and players in their respective regions; and to assist coaches and athletes to access elite-standard techniques and expertise in areas such as sports science, sports medicine and the career and education advisory services (CEAS) for elite sports. They will also focus on the enhancement of sports development programs in Aboriginal communities.

The Katherine position has been filled by David King, a well-known Darwin and Territory sporting identity and former Northern Territory Cricket Association development officer. The Alice Springs position has been filled by Fiona Gaye, a Bachelor of Applied Science specialising in sports science. She has represented Australia in badminton. We had recruited a person for the Nhulunbuy position but, unfortunately, she subsequently withdrew her application. We retendered recently. We had 17 high-quality applications for that position. We are recruiting at the moment and that position will be filled early next month.
