Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1995-11-22

I refer the Chief Minister to the total quality assurance (TQA) research survey which states quite clearly that the Territory public hospital system is held in the lowest regard of any public hospital system in the country. Who does the Chief Minister say is responsible for this state of affairs? Does he think that the Minister for Health Services, who has made himself a laughing-stock around Australia, should bear some of the blame? If so, how can we have any confidence in him?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, my response is - bring on Carmen Lawrence. Before that, Richardson said that he would fix everything. He came to the Territory and made big promises, saying that he would sort out Territorians. However, I remind the member for Wanguri that I am not the Minister for Health Services.

Mr Bailey: No, you are the Chief Minister, and we are asking you to comment on the incompetence of your minister who has reduced hospital services for Territorians to the least respected in Australia.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! The member for Wanguri.

Mr STONE: If he wishes to be as rude as that, I will not answer his question.
