Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BELL - 1994-12-01

I remind the Minister for Transport and Works of successive undertakings, more than 10 years old now, to seal the Jay Creek to Hermannsburg Road. Members would be aware that the section from Alice Springs to Jay Creek was sealed during World War II. In the early 1980s, another 40 km section was sealed from Jay Creek to the Wallace Rockhole turnoff and, immediately before the last election, another 5 km was sealed. Thus, 45 km has been sealed since self-government. Will the minister give an undertaking on behalf of the government to complete the sealing of the Jay Creek to Hermannsburg Road in the life of this parliament?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will give no such undertaking. I remind members of the dreadful set of circumstances whereby the Territory's federal member, Hon Warren Snowdon, forced changes to local roads funding in relation to the responsibility for 8000 km of roads in Aboriginal areas by requiring that the funding be removed from the Territory government and redirected to community government councils. I have explained the problems that that has caused.
