Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr SETTER - 1996-11-21

Over the years, I have taken an interest in Taminmin High School because one of the teachers there is a resident in my electorate. He has invited me there on several occasions. I have had the opportunity to see the very good work in animal husbandry, horticulture etc that is being done at the school. I was particularly pleased to learn recently that a capital works program is under way there. That is long overdue. They are doing a wonderful job there.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr SETTER: Darwin rural area is a very dynamic. Horticulture and agriculture are expanding at a great rate of knots. I am particularly interested in this capital works program.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! There has been a propensity in recent times for these long lead-ins to questions. I ask the member to come to his question as quickly as possible.

Mr SETTER: Mr Speaker, I thank you for your understanding and leniency in this matter, particularly in consideration of the leniency that you extended to members of the

opposition earlier today. Will the minister update the Assembly on the progress of the capital works that are being carried out at Taminmin High School?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will be every bit as brief as the member who asked the question. Taminmin High School is a great comprehensive school. I know, Mr Speaker, that you have played a very vital role there. A $1.2m extension, providing a new, state-of-the-art science block and some extensions to the administration area, is under way. The school is under the excellent management of Steve Sjoberg and his deputy, Denise Wilkowski. It has an excellent school council. It provides an excellent education right through to Year 12 for those rural students. Not only does it have some general vocational education training programs, but ...

Mr Coulter: Farming interests.

Mr FINCH: Yes, there are the cattle stud and the tropical horticulture classes. They provide a very special flavour at what is a very special school. It is great news that the new facilities will be available and open by early 1997.
