Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-08-16

The Chief Minister has said that, for the former Chief Electoral Officer to have any credibility in this matter, he had to have drawn attention to the alleged events in every piece of correspondence that he had with the government during that period. If the Chief Minister wants to maintain that stance, I ask whether he is prepared to table all of that correspondence. Obviously, the former Chief Electoral Officer did not have to raise the matter every time he discussed funding matters or replied to requests. Will the Chief Minister table all of the documentation to enable us to determine just what was or was not raised?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, to the contrary, I would like to see what the Leader of the Opposition has by way of documentation. It is all very well for him to sit there and quote me the Criminal Code and the Electoral Act. Let me quote him the Electoral Act. Let us see what he has. Let us see what has been removed from the Electoral Office and what is now in the possession of the Leader of the Opposition.
