Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1995-05-23

Given that, earlier this year, the minister received the draft Darwin Central Area Heritage Master Plan, which was prepared by Platt Consultants, MacDougall and Vine, can the minister advise when this plan will be made public? Given that the historic Wesleyan Church was nominated to the Territory Heritage Register in September 1992, and has been recommended for listing by the Heritage Advisory Council because of its heritage significance, can the minister advise when its listing will be approved?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, that particular document has been circulated to my Cabinet colleagues for discussion in Cabinet. I expect that to happen in the very near future or within a number of weeks. The consultants' report provides 3 options as to what should be done with the Wesleyan Church, and they are being considered. When my Cabinet colleagues have read the document, which details a range of heritage buildings and sets in place Northern Territory government policy in respect of heritage protection for various residential and other buildings within the CBD precinct, and have made a decision, I will release the details.
