When will a public mammography screening facility be available to women in Alice Springs? How will women living in areas remote from Alice Springs be able to access the facility?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am well aware of the honourable member's interest in this issue, and that of the member for Braitling. The renovations to the new facility in Alice Springs will be completed by Christmas. The equipment will be in place and new staff recruited to commence operations in the first week in January. That is an exciting development. It is state-of-the-art equipment. The equipment is capable of being relocated up the highway, although it cannot leave the bitumen, to service not only Tennant Creek and Katherine but people outside those communities. People outside Alice Springs - and this happens now for Darwin - are given priority placement on the list when they are coming into town. Some 2000 women have been tested this year through the Darwin facility. The use of this specialised equipment will be maximised. The first trip up the track from Alice Springs will occur in April and a second is scheduled for July. Thus, people in remoter areas will be able to access the facility.
