Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-02-21

I ask a supplementary question of the Chief Minister who refused to answer my question. Is it a fact that he took the matter to the party room last year, that he gave a commitment to his colleagues that he would consult further with them before proceeding and that he broke his word?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am surprised that, on this first sitting day, after a long Christmas break which I am sure we all enjoyed ...

Mr Ede: You were reading about euthanasia.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr PERRON: It is not the most joyful subject to study on an aeroplane.

I am surprised that the Leader of the Opposition does not have more pressing issues to raise with the government. He is well aware that I have no responsibility to rise to my feet and answer the question that he is raising with me today.

Mr Ede: Your leadership is important.

Mr PERRON: The question is not addressed to me as Chief Minister of the government of the Northern Territory at all. It is not a matter in relation to which I am technically responsible to the opposition ...

Mr Ede: You are ducking and weaving - hiding behind standing orders.

Mr PERRON: Mr Speaker, I am not hiding at all. However, I appeal to the Leader of the Opposition to turn his attention to matters that might be of particular or immediate relevance to the Northern Territory. I ask him to do his job.
