Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1996-11-19

On 27 February 1996, the Chief Minister told this House: `I look at my electoral roll and I find there names, addresses, occupation, sex, electoral number and some of them have dates of birth. That is the package that I buy. I am assured that this information is provided by the Australian Electoral Commission'. The Chief Minister must know that he cannot legally obtain Territorians' dates of birth from the Australian Electoral Commission. Will the minister now

admit that he personally obtains and uses prohibited personal and confidential information on Territorians?

Mr Bailey: `Shame Stone'! Have the courage of your convictions. Put a bit of spike into it.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! The Chief Minister will resume his seat. I warn honourable members opposite that, if they continue with their interjections, some warnings will be given and then perhaps a naming will follow.

Mr STONE: Mr Speaker, I do not resile from the fact that I buy my package through Feedback Services. At one time, there were birth dates in it. That is a matter of public record. I have said it on the public record. In fact, I may even have said it in this Chamber. I did not obtain anything directly from the AEC. I buy from Feedback Services. It is a package which I believe costs me $1000 a year. At one time, some birth dates were included in the information. However, that has not continued to be the practice. So what? Is the Leader of the Opposition suggesting that I have been delving into the Northern Territory Electoral Office to obtain birth dates?

Mr Bell: Yes.

Mr STONE: The member for MacDonnell says yes. Can we be clear about this? Who is running the strategy today? Is it the member for MacDonnell or the Leader of the Opposition? Is that the allegation that the Leader of the Opposition is making? She will want to be sure of her facts if she claims that, because it is wrong. I obtain my package from Feedback Services. I buy it commercially as any politician in the Northern Territory is able to do ...

Mr SPEAKER: Order! I warn both the member for Wanguri and the member for Nhulunbuy. They are on one warning only. The next will be a naming.

Mr STONE: Thank you, Mr Speaker. As I said, I buy that package as I am entitled to do. If the Leader of the Opposition wants to make a big song and dance about the fact that some birth dates were in it at some stage, clearly she has the wrong priorities for trying to run the opposition in the Northern Territory.
