Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1996-11-19

Yesterday, I asked whether the Chief Minister would hand over his illegal electorate database to the Northern Territory Police Force, together with all correspondence between himself and his Queensland supplier of this protected, private information. He failed to answer the question. It is a simple question, requiring a simple yes-or-no answer. Will he hand over his electorate database, and his correspondence with his supplier? Yes or no?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, in the event that Northern Territory police would like to examine any of my records in my electorate office, they are very welcome to access them. I wonder whether the Leader of the Opposition would be prepared to open up her records? Would she be prepared to disclose what she holds on her database? I have nothing to hide and I am very happy for them to open books and look at what is in them.

The Leader of the Opposition uses words like `illegal database'. I suggest she should get her facts right. She was on her feet yesterday, trying to beat this up and make out that these unsubstantiated allegations somehow have the ring of truth about them. However, she has yet to demonstrate in any way that what she is saying is correct. When she gets to her feet and tries to make out there has been some illegality or wrongdoing, she needs to come up with something a little more substantial than a long rambling question that simply sprays allegations across the Chamber. Mr Speaker, I repeat what I said. I have absolutely nothing to hide. If the Northern Territory police wish to look, they are welcome to do so.
