Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-02-21

Mr Speaker, how does the Chief Minister explain the story in today's The Australian which states that he told CLP parliamentary party members that he would come back to them with further information about euthanasia after he first introduced the idea in the party room last year? Is that true? If so, does the Chief Minister agree that his failure to honour his promise and further consult with his colleagues has led to anger and deep division within his own party room?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, life would be very comfortable if one were in the position of the Leader of the Opposition who obviously spends almost every day reading southern newspapers. I wish I had that luxury. In fact, when I am travelling on a plane, I spend some hours perusing the southern newspapers that have so much information in them. However, I can assure the Leader of the Opposition that I do not read southern newspapers in the normal course of the day, the week or even the year. Thus, I have no idea of the article to which he refers nor of the views of the journalist who wrote it.

Mr Ede: Is it true? Is it a fact?

Mr PERRON: Consequently, I could hardly be expected to comment any further.
