Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-05-15

As he is probably aware, I travel along Tulagi Road, on the edge of Palmerston, at least twice a day if not more often.

Mr Bell: Are you going to answer the question, Steve, as you promised yesterday?

Mr Coulter: Come on!

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH: Shut up and let me ask my question!

Members: Hear, hear!

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH: I want to know the answer to this one. I travel along Tulagi Road at least twice a day. For some months now, contractors have been engaged in earthworks, installing additional water piping to Robertson Barracks, no doubt on behalf of the Power and Water Authority. When will the rubbish from this project be cleared away? It has been left at the side of the road for a long time. This rubbish consists of 44-gallon drums, 4-gallon drums and tyres. If the contractors want people to remove it, I suggest it be collected in one pile and a notice erected inviting people to help themselves. However, as the situation is at present, nobody is doing anything about it.

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I thank the honourable member for her question. I am aware of the difficulties on that road, caused not only by the rubbish she has referred to but also by the break-up of the sides of the road and the danger posed by the pipes. The latter, in particular, has been raised with me by soldiers who ride pushbikes from the barracks. I apologise for the fact that I have not made a greater effort to solve this problem. I certainly raised a concern, but I have not followed it up. I undertake to do that immediately after Question Time this morning.
