Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-05-23

Having regard to certain recent unusual happenings in the Palmerston Town Council - for example, expensive legal proceedings perhaps in the immediate future; meetings being called but not all councillors being notified; retrospective pay rises being asked for by the mayor; the threatened or actual strike by some staff yesterday; and exorbitant pay rises for some senior staff just before the local government elections - and assuming the status quo is not changed at that coming election, when will the minister consider putting in an administrator?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I suppose that comments like that probably serve best when put into the public arena at a time when is a local government election is imminent, as is the case this weekend. I think the people are probably best suited to make a decision here.

In relation to the legal matter that the member for Nelson mentioned, I am aware that some moves will be occurring in the very near future. Therefore, I do not want to make any further comment. I have no intention of appointing an administrator. However, I can assure members that any evidence of contravention of the Local Government Act will be acted on.
