Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1996-10-10

The Territory's senior environmental health officer has ordered the erection of warning signs in front of a Palmerston creek polluted with human sewage. That creek flows into Hudson Creek and then into Darwin Harbour.

Mr Speaker, I seek leave to table photographs of the creek.

Leave granted.

Ms MARTIN: As members will see, the signs say: `Do Not Swim. Wear Protective Footwear'. Why should our children have to stop playing in this local creek as a result of pollution? Are these warning signs part of the Territory lifestyle that the minister wants to promote for Territorians?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will have to take the question on notice. I will investigate ...

Ms Martin: Your department erected the sign.

Mr BURKE: I have a big department. I will take the question on notice. However, at times, there are levels of pollution in certain areas which are considered to be safe when disseminated by the tides etc. This may be an issue of that kind. I will obtain a complete answer for the honourable member.
