Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1996-02-29

I ask the Chief Minister to confirm that the member for Victoria River, the government Whip, is canvassing for votes and further that he, the Chief Minister, refused a request from me to defer this week of the sittings of Assembly to allow all members to be out in their electorates at this time. I ask him how he could justify this use of powers that he holds for what are party political purposes.

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the first question I have to ask the Leader of the Opposition in return is: where is the member for Arafura?

Mr Ede: He will be here later.

Mr STONE: He says that he will be here later. That is not really good enough. Is he canvassing for votes?

Members interjecting.

Mr STONE: The Leader of the Opposition wrote to me, asking for a deferral of the second week of these sittings. My answer was that it would be business as usual. If he wants to know where the member for Victoria River is, he should ask him during the course of the next sittings or when he returns to the Chamber.
