Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1995-10-12

In light of the launch on Monday of the 'It's Got to Stop...' domestic violence campaign, how does the Chief Minister feel about the Pauls iced coffee advertisements in which punches are thrown, in one case by a man and another case by a woman, and what they are fighting about is a carton of iced coffee? Does he think the image portrayed by this advertisement, which is screened frequently both on television and in the cinema, is consistent with the strong anti-violence message launched on Monday?

ANSWER

This is a trick question. You cannot even take the smile off your face. Which one of them put you up to that?

Ms Martin: I beg your pardon!

Mr STONE: Mr Speaker, this government has demonstrated its total commitment to domestic violence programs. We have spent probably more on such programs over an extended period of time than any other government in Australia.

Ms Martin: Do you know the advertisement?

Mr STONE: I thought you would applaud what we have done. I saw you at the launch, and you were clapping very loudly. I thought it was very good that we should have a bipartisan political approach to the campaign.

Ms Martin: But how do you feel about the advertisement?

Mr STONE: If you have a concern about the Pauls iced coffee advertisement, which I think I have seen although I am not a great watcher of television, perhaps you ought to take it up with Pauls.

Ms Martin: I wondered how you felt about it.

Mr STONE: If you think it is really crook, why don't you write to me and I will take it up with Pauls.

Ms Martin: I have taken it up with Pauls. What is your feeling about it?

Mr STONE: It is a silly question. Do you notice that many people drink Pauls iced coffee up here?
