Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1996-08-22

Mr SPEAKER: The minister is not here at the moment.

Mr BAILEY: Mr Speaker, may I ask who is accepting questions on his behalf?

Mr Stone: No one.

Mr BAILEY: Mr Speaker, I redirect my question to the Chief Minister. In the May sittings, his minister told the Assembly, in a debate on the failure of the former Country Liberal Party member for Casuarina, Nick Dondas, to disclose his financial interest in the North Australian Film Corporation, that Nick Dondas had never received any direct or indirect financial benefit from the North Australian Film Corporation.

Mr Speaker, I seek leave to table the 1995 accounts of Nalisi Pty Ltd.

Leave granted.

Mr BAILEY: This company is owned and operated by Nick Dondas and his wife. These accounts show that Nalisi Pty Ltd provided a loan to the North Australian Film Corporation of $117 150 which presumably was repaid to the company with interest. The accounts also include an entry: `NAFC - Partnership'. In the face of this evidence, will the Chief Minister concede that Nick Dondas has received financial benefit from North Australian Film Corporation? And does he admit that his minister misled Territorians and this Assembly to protect the Country Liberal Party government's colleague, Nick Dondas?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it must have hurt members opposite really badly when they lost the federal seat. It must still be stinging. The member for Wanguri rises to his feet for his usual grubby purposes. We have had many examples of his raising as fact allegations that are based on either hearsay ...

Mr Bailey: No.

Mr STONE: We had a classic example last week. He asked a question of the Minister for Health Services. He waved around a tape which he never tabled. Instead, he tabled a transcript from which he drew the inference that an allegation, which was based on hearsay evidence, was factual.

Mr Bailey interjecting.

Mr STONE: You have no credibility at all!

Mr Bailey interjecting.

Mr STONE: The very fact that the member continues to interject is proof that he does not want the answers on the public record.

I will be pleased to pass his question to the Minister for Asian Relations, Trade and Industry. I am sure he will provide the member for Wanguri with an answer in due course.
