Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1994-11-22

Given that it is necessary for Conservation Commission officers to continue remedial work at the cliff face at Gunn Point a year after Dames & Moore, on behalf of the Department of Transport and Works, undertook investigative work to test the fragility of the cliffs before the proposed residential subdivision occurs on the cliff tops, will this

continuing necessary repair job influence the minister to refuse his consent for this proposed residential subdivision on the cliff tops? If not, why not?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, that is a fairly convoluted and circuitous question. The member is referring to the Murramujuk subdivision at Gunn Point.

Mrs Padgham-Purich: I am referring to the fragility of the cliffs which are still being repaired.

Mr HATTON: You referred to the subdivision, Noel.

The Conservation Commission is completing currently a provisional environmental report to ensure that any subdivision in that area is done in an environmentally-responsible way. The fact that the Conservation Commission is addressing issues in relation to the cliff face in that locality indicates the seriousness with which our government views environmental controls in the area. It should give the member for Nelson comfort that whatever we do will be done in an environmentally-responsible manner.

To answer the member's specific question, the fact that works are proceeding on the cliff face will not deter from my consideration of the development of the subdivision being prepared by the Conservation Commission. I have given public undertakings already that, at the same time as we release the subdivision plan for public exhibition and comment, we will release the Conservation Commission's provisional environmental report attached to that subdivisional allocation. I am sure that the member will be satisfied then that proper environmental controls are being adopted in the subdivision for Murramujuk. There will be excellent opportunities for Darwin and Litchfield residents to develop their weekenders and enjoy the Gunn Point area in a responsible manner. I can inform the member also that there will be public access to the waterfront for persons other than those living in the area. That question was raised and discussed with me by the Litchfield Shire Council.
