Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 1996-05-14

I understand that the chairman of the Northern Territory Planning Authority intends to resign in the near future. Has a replacement been selected for appointment by the government and, if so, who is that person?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am pleased to announce that the government has selected the current chairman of the Liquor Commission and outgoing president of the Litchfield Shire Council, Mr John Maley, to become the new chairman of the NT Planning Authority. Mr Maley will stand down from the position of president of Litchfield Shire when the local government elections are held on 25 May, and he will take up his appointment as chairman of the Planning Authority on 1 July.

The current chairman, Mr Jim Robertson, will resign on 30 June following a 6 and a half-year term in the position. I wish to pay tribute to the contribution that Jim Robertson has made to the people of the Northern Territory in his time as chairman of the authority. I thank him for his professionalism and his independent advice over many years. Members would be aware that the task of the chairman of the Planning Authority is a complex one. It requires enormous energy. I think Mr Robertson has carried out his responsibilities with a high degree of commitment and professionalism. I wish him every success in his future endeavours.

As the president of the Litchfield Shire, Mr Maley has had a long-standing association with the Litchfield division of the NT Planning Authority. He will bring to the position of chairman of the authority specific expertise and experience that he has gained over the years. I think that he too will serve Territorians well. I look forward to working with him, and am sure that members join me in welcoming him to the position.
