Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 1994-06-30

During the election, I highlighted a dangerous section of the Stuart Highway adjacent to the Hearne Place shopping centre in the Braitling electorate. I believe that an amount has been allocated to upgrade this section of road and also the lighting. Has funding been allocated to upgrade that section of the highway in order to minimise the danger to motorists and pedestrians alike? If so, what action will be taken and when?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I thank the member for her question and her early interest in road safety matters. Road safety is recognised as an important issue by all of us. The Department of Transport and Works is aware of the accident situation in that particular area on the Stuart Highway. Because of a number of recent accidents in the area which have involved pedestrians, the street lighting is being upgraded there at a cost of $6000. I have been informed that the foundations have already been laid for the new lighting and the job is expected to be completed within the next 3 weeks.

I am advised that a traffic management scheme for the area has been proposed as a high priority for inclusion in our 1994-95 minor works program. The estimated cost of $25 000 covers a pedestrian traffic island, which is to be installed on the Stuart Highway, together with associated footpaths and kerbing. That will be a better focus for pedestrians who cross the highway in that area. We hope that that work will be completed by September 1994.
