Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1997-02-18

For many years, during my football career, I believe I was an ambassador for the Territory interstate. For many years, I copped a bit of abuse from people down south because of the colour of my skin. I did not expect that to happen here in my home town. Does the Chief Minister believe that Aboriginal Territorians who have represented the Territory and struggled against the racism down south are `whingeing, whining, carping blacks'?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I can tell the member for Arafura that I have never described him in those terms because I do not consider him to be in the same category as Mr Yunupingu. I make no apologies for what I said about that man or for the description that I used. It was accurate.
