ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it is very clear. He is now going a little further ...

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr MANZIE: I do not know whether I need to go any further. Obviously, they want to talk to him, but he does not want to know the facts. I remind honourable members that the member asked a question and quoted from the member for Nightcliff's newsletter. I gave the answer that demonstrated that he did not understand or even know what was going on. He now asks another question: is the counter of the police station manned 24 hours a day? It is not.

Members interjecting.

Mr Stirling: It is a broken promise. It is not worth the paper it is written on.

Mr MANZIE: Mr Speaker, obviously the member for Nhulunbuy is also an expert.

I believe the community would like to hear this. We have had a review by experts who have recommended that that particular station should not operate a 24-hour front counter service and that the resources should continue to be deployed on the streets and in the community. I agree with that view.

Mr Bailey: They got it wrong.

Mr MANZIE: The expert from Wanguri says that they got it wrong.

The community should be aware that the Northern Territory Branch of the Australian Labor Party has a policy whereby it thinks it knows better than the management of government departments. In this regard, the ALP has a policy whereby it would interfere and direct the Commissioner of Police on operational matters.

Members interjecting.

Mr MANZIE: Mr Speaker, I do not agree with that. I reiterate that, if the local police office is operational 24 hours a day, and ...

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! There is far too much chatter on the opposition benches. A question was asked. I expect members to listen to the minister in silence.

Mr MANZIE: Mr Speaker, the behaviour by opposition members is clearly designed to prevent the community from hearing the answer to the question. It is pathetic. We can

imagine the kind of problems members opposite would have caused their school teachers when they were at school.
