Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-06-20

The Chief Minister did not attempt even to answer the substantive content of the question I asked earlier. We all know that he changed what he said between the morning and the afternoon. We want to know the circumstances surrounding the issuing of this memo stating that dispatch of the letters was to be withheld until 2 pm on 16 June 1995. On Friday afternoon, the Chief Minister said that there was some technical reason for it. This question provides another opportunity for him to set that matter straight.

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I made it very clear in my explanation that, when I said what I had said on the radio, I believed it to be true. I am not standing here obfuscating or trying to duck it. I am taking it on the chin, and telling members that I acted in good faith and, when I said what I had said, I did so on the basis of what I had been told. The balance of the question should be directed to the minister responsible ...

Mr Ede: However, you said it.

Mr STONE: ... since the memorandum emanated from his department. I am sure that he would be quite happy to take the member's question. In fact, he invites the question.
