Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1995-08-23

Can the minister advise whether more accountability, in the fields of capital expenditure and managerial administration than the usual annual report provides, is requested of St John Ambulance considering that it receives grants totalling $3.5m a year from the Northern Territory government?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, is the member asking whether it should have a greater degree of accountability? I did not understand the member's question. I am unsure whether she is asking if St John Ambulance is accountable or not accountable.

Mrs Padgham-Purich: Is it required to be more accountable than merely submitting an annual report to the minister?

Mr FINCH: Certainly, there are processes in place that require St John Ambulance to report on its effectiveness. From time to time, specific reviews of the organisation are conducted to ensure that it is delivering an even service effectively and efficiently on behalf of the taxpayer. As to whether a review is in progress at this time, I am not altogether sure. However, certainly, I am willing to come back to the member if she suspects that for some reason such a review may be required. I am unsure of the purpose of the question, but St John Ambulance is required to be much more accountable than would be covered simply by the provision of an annual report.
